A 38-year-old bookkeeper was charged with second degree forgery and theft after she allegedly embezzled $7,208 from the Middletown she worked for. The alleged incidents occurred last July and August.


 

A 38-year-old bookkeeper was charged with second degree forgery and theft after she allegedly embezzled $7,208 from the Middletown she worked for. The alleged incidents occurred last July and August.

Middletown Police said Sonya Helwig, 38, of Newark, wrote checks to herself without permission on the business account of One Off Rod & Custom located in the 100 block of Sandhill Dr. in Middletown. She then allegedly cashed the checks and kept the money.

The loss was discovered by the business owner, who immediately reported the alleged incident to the Middletown Police Department.

Police said they are conducting a forensic examination of all the businesses bank accounts.

Helwig was released on $10,000 unsecured bond.
