It’s time to get your checkbooks out and your ears ready.
The Middletown-Odessa Rotary Club will host their annual auction Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6:59 p.m. in Middletown Memorial Hall to raise funds to support local organizations that benefit the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend community.
Ceil Rozumalski, auction co-chair for the rotary club, said this is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Funds from the auction help support local organizations like the Appoquinimink Boys & Girls Club, Middletown Youth Center, Habitat for Humanity, the Middletown High School INTERACT Club, and tuition for disabled children to attend the Easter Seals Camp Fairlee Manor.
“The local rotary club is your local business people giving back to the community they live and work in,” she said. “It really does fund a lot of activities.”
Rozumalski said the proceeds also go toward a scholarship fund for high school seniors in the area.
“If we are able to raise enough, we’ll give away three scholarships for $1,500 a piece,” she said. “We’re really hoping the community comes out and supports our efforts.”
Rozumalski said this is not your typical, run-of-the-mill auction.
“It’s not as high-brow as a lot of the auctions you might hear about,” she said. “There’s things in the auction that go for $10 and there’s things that go for a few hundred dollars.”
Rozumalski said there is something for everyone. Even children find items they want to bid on.
She said with the holiday season right around the corner, many people use the auction to pick up Christmas and holiday presents for their families.
Rozumalski said there is a broad range in the items that people can expect to see.
“We have pumpkins and gourds all the way up to teeth whitening and dental services,” she said.
She said award-winning artist and Rotary Club member Mike Bignell, of Earleville, Md., will donate one of his paintings to the event, and Rep. Dick Cathcart (R-9th district) will donate a week-long stay at his house in Outer Banks, N.C.
Rozumalski said the club’s goal is to raise $20,000 overall.
“The expenses can be somewhat daunting, but the real goal here is to make scholarships available for community use,” she said. “If we have enough money, we give out grants to local non-profits and youth organizations.”
Rozumalski said last year’s auction was their best year to date, and the club would like to do even better this year.
“It’s a fun event,” she said. “I can’t emphasize enough how important it is and it really does end up benefiting a lot of people.”
