As you’re sipping your morning coffee or grabbing some breakfast Tuesday morning, put down the paper and pick up the remote.
Home and Garden Television will feature local artist Steve Datz on an episode of “That’s Clever.”
The 30-minute episode, which will air at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 3, will show off Datz’s pottery skills, as he demonstrates how to make a donut vase and mocha tea tile.
For Datz, the show will be a look back at his past. The episode was filmed three and a half years ago in the studio basement of his home in Wilmington.
“It will be interesting to watch because I was going through a life change,” he said. “The people that know me will see it and get a smile for sure.”
Datz, who owns Your Creation Station in Middletown and also sells his pottery under Ryefield Ceramics, said he became interested in pottery when he was in elementary school, but did not start doing it professionally until four years ago.
“I put it down for 20 years,” he said. “[But] everything I did always reminded me of pottery.”
Datz said he likes making all kinds of pieces, including bowls, mugs, pitchers, tea pots and especially double wall vessels, also called doughnut vases. He also makes all his own glazes and is starting to get into creating fabric designs.
“I have a very contemporary style,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of potters making double wall vessels. At least, they aren’t making them like mine.”
Datz, a member of the Delaware Artist Registry and Delaware By Hand, said after learning that HGTV was looking for crafters to feature on the show, he decided to submit materials because he was looking for various avenues to show his work.
“They said complicated projects aren’t necessarily a bad thing,” he said. “So I was like, ‘Well, I got something for you.’ ”
Datz said the most challenging part about the filming of the segment was creating separate pieces for the different stages of the process.
“It was fun though,” he said. “As I was doing it, I was really thinking about what goes into it.”
Datz said he hopes viewers across the nation enjoy watching the pieces being created as much as he enjoys making them.
“I love every aspect of it,” he said. “My dad laughs at me because I say I enjoy watching clay dry.”
