The Appoquinimink School District saw declines in its reading and math scores this year when the 2010 Delaware Student Testing Program results were released recently.
Nearly 85,000 Delaware students in second through 10th grade were tested for reading and math in March. There was no summer re-testing this year.

Reading
In the Appoquinimink School District, the average scores for reading declined in all grade levels compared with last year’s scores.
All of the district’s reading averages per grade level were, however, higher than the Delaware state reading average for each grade, which has been achieved each year since 2006.
The percentage of students who met or exceeded state standards on the reading portion of the 2010 DSTP decreased in each grade level, compared to 2009.
Dr. Tony Marchio, superintendent for the district, said it is hard to determine why the scores decreased this year, but the district does plan to incorporate enhanced programs for elementary special education and new students entering the district, which he hopes will have a positive impact on future test scores.
“Any time the scores decline, we have to take a look at what we’re doing and how we’re delivering instruction and make adjustments,” he said.
Marchio said he is happy to see that the district is still above the state average.
“We’re still doing well in that respect, but we have always said we can’t get complacent or comfortable,” he said. “There’s always room for improvement, and we have to work harder.”

Math
The average math scores in the Appoquinimink School District declined for all grades except seventh and eighth compared to the 2009 averages.
The district’s eighth grade saw the largest increase in average math scores from 2009 to 2010. In 2010, the average score was 524.42, opposed to 517.85 in 2009.
The average scores in each grade in Appoquinimink exceeded the state’s average scores, which was also achieved in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The percentage of students in the district who met or exceeded state standards in math decreased compared to 2009 in all grades except seventh and eighth.
The percentage of Appoquinimink students who met or exceeded state standards in math was above the state percentages in every grade level, as did each grade in 2009.
Marchio said all three middle schools and the two high schools in the district had excellent scores in math this year, which the district was pleased about.
“We have math specialists in there now,” he said. “I don’t have to attribute that to the scores, but I do think it’s one factor that’s helped our scores at the middle school level.”

Rankings
Out of 94 elementary schools tested, the fifth grade at Olive B. Loss Elementary School ranked seventh for reading and 10th for mathematics. The eighth grade at Alfred G. Waters Middle School tested eighth out of 45 schools for reading and mathematics.
The 10th grade at Appoquinimink High School ranked 10th out of 38 schools tested for mathematics. The 10th grade at Middletown High School ranked ninth out of 38 schools tested for reading and sixth in mathematics.
