Middletown High's new baseball lineup aims to keep the winning tradition alive and well this spring.

Coaches Scott Smith is the varsity head coach, assisted by Mike Rausch. Matt Engelman is the junior varsity head coach, and Mike Oberle guides the freshmen.

Last year 17-3, won Blue Hen Flight A, lost in state tournament quarterfinals.

Outlook A new generation arrives on the varsity scene, ready to maintain the standard of excellence that put the program among the state’s elite during the past decade under coach Smith. Middletown advanced to the state title game in 2008, and won its second straight Flight A title in 2010 and made the quarterfinals. The Cavaliers also advanced to the state semifinals in 2002, 2004 and 2009.

Besides honorable mention All-Blue Hen Flight A outfielder Prado (who hit .455 as a sophomore), there’s almost no experience among the returnees. That doesn’t mean this year’s roster of players is unfamiliar with the expectations of hard work and focus associated with putting on the blue uniform at MHS.

“We’re serious about playing baseball and will be fine,” said Husni, who saw spot duty as a first baseman in 2010.

Prado went 20-for-44 as a sophomore, scored 14 runs and had seven RBIs. He struck out six batters in six innings as a pitcher. Keener went 3-for-10 with a double during limited varsity plate appearances.

Junior varsity juniors – Paul Agostini; Michael Bobon; sophomores – Josh Billings; Austin Brant; Matt Jolikko; Josh Murph; Rudy Rabb; Kyle Spotts; Niko Windett.

Freshman Dennis Berger; Jacob Bricker; Jaquan Blalock; Mitchell Clemons; Kenyon Day; Christopher Frank; Bryan Gerretz; Michael Kline; Daniel Lyons; Garret Maniatis; Robbie Pitroli; Michael Salony; Frank Townsend; Darius Wade; Christopher Whitlock.
