The Middletown High girls soccer team has high standards to uphold heading into the 2011 season.

Coaches Brian Derrickson is the head coach, assisted by Chris Whalen and Shauna Davis.

Last year 9-7, dropped a 5-0 decision to Padua in state tournament first round.

Seniors Riley Lawton; Lyndsey Lewis; Ashley McCarthy; Kelsey Price; Alicia Wagner.

Juniors Kristen Burgess; Ciena Canty; Andrea Dossantos; Ashley Lorber; Shelby Smith; Taylor Starratt.

Freshmen Alexandra Bucci; Claire Gerlitz; Tiffany Johnson; Rachel Lintz; Rachel Wagner; Brittany Wellings.

Outlook A program that regularly turns out state tournament qualifiers has five returning starters, along with four players elevated from the junior varsity and an influx of ever-improving freshmen. The return of Lewis is key, since she missed two-thirds of last season with injury.

Senior Canty received all-state mention last spring, and is joined by veterans McCarthy, Price, Wagner and Smith. Up from the JV are Lawton, Burgess, Dossantos and Lorber. Making their debut are freshmen Gerlitz, Johnson, Lintz, Wagner and Wellings. Starratt and Bucci are also varsity candidates.

Derrickson said the focus of pre-season has been to establish an identity and chemistry among all the programs players.

“We continuously play the states elite teams and to be successful, our approach has always been the performance of each player and the rest will take care of itself,” Derrickson said via email. “The preseason had its highs and lows but we are prepared for our first test.”

Most importantly will be the progression of the younger players as they are now in an environment where the game is much faster and decisions, technically and tactically, must be quick and efficient, Derrickson said.

Dossantos, a year-round player, returns to goalkeeper for the Cavaliers where she should improve greatly from her year round play as well.

“The success of this team, although easily measured in wins and losses, will be decided by the chemistry among the players and their determination to motivate themselves internally and each other externally,” Derrickson said. “If this occurs, we have a nice opportunity for a strong season.”

The campaign began last week with a 6-0 win over visiting Glasgow. Price and Lorber each scored twice, with Gerlitz and Alicia Wagner each scored once. Price made two assists and Alicia Wagner had one.
