William H. “Bill” Thompson, age 87, of Middletown, DE passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Born on January 19, 1924, he was the son, of the late Edith Thompson Staats.
He proudly served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He served in the European Theater of Operation and participated in the invasion of Normandy, landing on Omaha Beach and also participated in the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge in 1945, he served in the Delaware Army National Guard from 1950 - 1953.
He was a charter and life member of the Sergeant William Floyd Nelson VFW Post #3798. Bill was a Master Mason member of Union Lodge #5, A.F.& A.M. and a member of the Teamsters Union, local 326. He retired in 1986 after 31 years of service with Schagrin Gas Company.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes B. Thompson, of 65 years.
He is survived by three daughters, Marilyn McGeoch, Jacquelyn Spicer and her husband, Rev. Jack Spicer all of Middletown, DE, and Ramona Vinyard of Milford, DE; two sons, Larry Thompson of Middletown, DE and Garry Thompson and his wife, Betty of Townsend, DE; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grand daughter.
Funeral services will be held 1 pm on Saturday January 14, at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery near Port Penn, DE.
