  • Steven Douglas “Dougie” Chillas Sr. of Dover, DE passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012. He was 57.
    Steve was born on January 4, 1955 in Wilmington, DE to the late Winifred and Arthur Chillas.
    He was a 1974 graduate of Middletown High School.
    Steve was known to all as  a friend. Throughout his life he worked painting airplanes, working as a carpenter and spending most of his life as an Emergency Medical Technician. Working with his hands is something that Steve was always known for, whether it was helping his friends and family build something, working on a car or using his hands to save a life.
    Steve dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to serving his community as a firefighter and EMT. He was an integral part of Ambulance 64 in Smyrna serving in numerous positions within the organization as well as literally building the organization to what it is today.
    Steve is survived by his wife Sandy, of 29 years. He also has four sons, Steven and his wife Regina of Harrington, Douglas of Smyrna, Michael and his wife Rebecca of Smyrna, and Jeremy of Dover. He has 6 grandchildren, McKinley, Jonathan, Steven, Ryan, Catherine and Megan. Steve is also survived by his brothers and sister Karen of Livingston, TX, Arthur “Skip” and his wife Lisa of Dover, Kevin of Livingston, TX and Bruce and his wife Lisa of Middletown.
    Steve was preceded in death by his Father and Mother and by his sister Mary.
    Funeral arrangements will be handled by Faries Funeral Home in Smyrna, however, all services will be held at the American Legion Ambulance 64 Hall, located on 111 West Glenwood Avenue in Smyrna, DE. A viewing was held from 6-9 p.m. at the American Legion Ambulance Hall on Wednesday January 11th, and again at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 12th.
    The funeral service was to be held at the American Legion Ambulance Hall at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 12th. Burial will be held at the Gracelawn Memorial Park in Wilmington, DE.
    In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Legion Ambulance Station 64, new building fund, 111 West Glenwood Avenue, Smyrna, DE 19977.
