  • Dorothy H. “Dot” Smith, 74, of Townsend, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, February 27, 2012 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.
    Following graduation from Middletown High School in 1954, she attended University of Delaware.
    In her earlier years, Dot worked in the fiber division for DuPont Company at their Newport site. On October 13, 1956, she married the love of her life, William K. “Smokey” Smith, Jr. During the late 1950s, she and Smokey worked together at Frontier Town in Ocean City, MD and also managed Castle Marina in Kent Island, MD. In 1970 she and Smokey started Smokey’s Gulf in Middletown, where she was currently the office manager.
    Dot was an avid rodeo fan and enjoyed competing in barrel racing in the northeast circuit. Every Saturday night from May to September she could be found at the Cowtown Rodeo watching her family compete in various rodeo events.
    In her earlier years, Dot was a member of the Townsend Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary. She was a past president of the Eastern Roper’s Association, past president of the Appoquinimink School Board from 1982-1987 and also served on the state board from 1990-1992.
    Dot was active within the community and especially enjoyed being a leader with MYF, Cub Scouts and 4-H where she could be involved with her children. Dot’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her loving family.
    She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Hitchens and most recently by her brother, Charles “Skip” Hitchens.
    She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, William “Smokey” Smith, Jr.; a son, Charles “Chuck” Smith of Townsend; daughter, JoAnna and her husband, Julian “Chip” Sheats of Warwick, MD; her mother, Frances Hitchens of Middletown; brother, Michael Hitchens and his wife, Margaret, of Lewes; two granddaughters, Hunter Smith and Savannah Sheats; two nephews, Josh and Tim Hitchens, as well as many dear friends.
    Funeral services will be held 11 am on Monday, March 5 at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 209 West Main Street in Townsend. Interment will follow in Townsend Cemetery. Family and friends may visit Sunday, March 4 from 4-7 pm at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown.
