  •   In a game that they never trailed by more than nine points, the St. Georges Tech boys basketball team almost had every answer for third-seeded Newark until time ran out.
In spite of a game-high 27 points from senior guard Raymond Anderson, the Hawks were unable to overcome the Yellowjackets, dropping a 65-59 decision Sunday afternoon in the state quarterfinals at the Bob Carpenter Center. “That’s the character of this team,” Hawks coach John French said. “This only the third graduating class the school has had, and we finished 16-6 this year. Couldn’t ask for more - they’re a great group of young men.”
The Hawks led 6-2 early, but the Yellowjacket scored the next 10 points to take a decisive edge, leading by a 40-32 count late in the third quarter. That was before Anderson started to cook, almost single-handedly bringing St. Georges back, and the Hawks tied the game at 49 on a Donte McGill lay-up with 2:30 to go in the game. Anderson scored 12 of his 27 points in the final period.
“My pull-up jumpshot was falling,” Anderson said of the offensive explosion. “We came this far and there was no turning back.” “Ray is a class act. He was a 5‘3 freshman when he first got here, but I knew we had something special then,” French. “Now he’s 6‘2, first team Flight B, Blue/Gold all-star. He’s got a bright future in front of him.”
Even after the tough loss, Anderson was fond of the four years he and fellow seniors McGill, Aaron Tilghman (who scored 16 points Sunday) and Danny McGrath put in, helping building a contender at St. Georges Tech. “I’m really proud, all the home games we had, how we fought together and never gave up,” Anderson said. “We made school history.”
