  • Callista Gingrich stopped at Silver Lake Elementary School April 4 as her husband’s campaign made its way through Delaware.
Her husband, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich is vying for the nomination in September’s GOP Presidential Primary Election. He met with about 400 people March 26 in the Hockessin area before stopping in Wilmington for dinner.
His wife’s encounter Wednesday was slightly different.
Mrs. Gingrich met with about 55 third and fourth grade students in the elementary school’s music room, where she read her children’s book, “Sweet Land of Liberty,” to them.
The students were made up of Melissa Fisher and Brienne Conway’s classes.
Accompanying her was Ellis the Elephant, the main character in her first book.
Ellis came in the form of a 6-foot tall man in an elephant costume who acted out scenes in the book as the first lady hopeful read.
The story follows Ellis as he travels through time, reliving major events in the development of the United States.
On one of the illustrated pages, Ellis wore a powder-wig along side the country’s founding fathers.
After the book reading the students asked questions. They all had written out what they wanted to ask on note cards and eagerly raised their hands.
One asked Mrs. Gingrich what she would do to make the world a better place.
She said that she would improve education and literacy and work to solve issues with diseases like cancer.
Another asked what she did for fun.
Mrs. Gingrich said that she reads, plays and listens to music and plays golf.
    Some students gasped excitedly.
Currently Mrs. Gingrich is working on her second book, which also stars Ellis the Elephant.
In this one, she said, he learns about the 13 colonies.
