Eleanor Q. Briden, 90, of Newark, Del., and formerly of Farmingdale, N.J., passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2012, in the presence of her loving family at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Del.
Born on March 4, 1922 in Orange, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Frederick David and Ellen Cecelia (Quinn) Luts.
On June 13, 1943, she married the love of her life, Noel Arthur Briden, Jr. Together they raised two children and shared 68 years of holy matrimony.
From an early age and until her passing, Eleanor was always community, politically, civic and Christian minded. She unselfishly devoted many hours volunteering at the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in New Jersey, serving in various offices as president, secretary and treasurer of fundraising. She was an active member of the Farmingdale United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in their choir and being a bell ringer. She worked several years for the Central Jersey Bank and later worked as an independent bookkeeper for various companies in Monmouth County.
In 1993, she and her husband moved from New Jersey to Delaware where she continued her love for her church, helping others and volunteering. She was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Townsend, active in the United Methodist Women’s Society, the 3M’s, Townsend Women’s Club and the Jean Birch MOT Senior Center. Being politically minded, she held various offices as president, treasurer and secretary of the Republican’s Club. Eleanor enjoyed the excitement of politics and loved being involved in the elections, especially the primaries.
Although Eleanor enjoyed working and volunteering, her first love was for her family. She loved taking care of them and being attentive to their needs. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and dear friend to many.
In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Fred David Luts and sister, Betty Haggerty.
She leaves many wonderful and cherished memories to her loving and devoted husband of 68 years, Noel, Jr.; two daughters, Susan Deckert and Grace Gates and her husband, John; four grandchildren, Carol Boyd and her husband, Scott, Jeanette Rhoades and Fenton Deckert and his wife, René and Billy Deckert and his wife, Mary; seven great-grandchildren, Leah, Fiona, Riley, Dougie, Christian, Lily and Sebastian and a nephew, Timothy Haggerty
A memorial service will be held at
11 a.m. on Friday, April 6, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 209 W. Main St. in Townsend where friends are invited to join her family in the fellowship hall immediately following services for lunch and to continue to share in the celebration of Eleanor’s life. Interment will be private.
