  • Elizabeth Schwalenberg, 90, of Middletown, DE and formerly of College Point, NY, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.


    Born on June 30, 1922 in Engelsbrunn, Romania, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hartmann) Backhaus.

  • Elizabeth Schwalenberg, 90, of Middletown, DE and formerly of College Point, NY, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.
    Born on June 30, 1922 in Engelsbrunn, Romania, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hartmann) Backhaus.
    Elizabeth enjoyed attending the Jean Birch MOT Senior Center in Middletown, where she loved working on ceramics.  She was the proud recipient of several ribbons awarded to her for the ceramic projects she displayed at the Delaware State Fair.   Although she didn’t play golf, she enjoyed watching it on television.  Elizabeth enjoyed gardening and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Karl in 1981; a brother and two sisters.
    Elizabeth leaves many wonderful memories to her two daughters, Heidemarie E. Bohn and her husband, Tony, with whom she lived with in Middletown for the past 25 years and Ursula Corrigan of Long Island, NY; three grandchildren, Tony Bohn, Jr., Christine Baker and her husband, Jason and Marion Dougherty and her husband, Shawn and seven great-grandchildren, Andrea Farley, Anthony Fouls, Gary Lloyd, Karlie Bohn, Victoria and Brandon Baker and Anna Dougherty.
    Funeral services will be held 8 pm on Friday, July 20 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where friends may visit with Elizabeth’s family from 7:00-8:00 pm.  She will be laid to rest with her loving husband 2 pm on Monday, July 23 at Mt. Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing, NY.
