  • Pedals for Progress is continuing to collect used bicycles to donate to those in need.
The used bike collection, which is being sponsored by the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend Rotary Club, is accepting any adult or child's bicycle in repairable condition to go towards a worthy cause.
Bikes for parts and disassembled bikes will not be accepted.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, there will be two locations that the bicycles can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One will be at the Middletown Super Wal-Mart off of U.S. Route 301 and the other will be on East Main Street near the Middletown Post Office.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Middletown Police Department will also hold a collection in conjunction with the annual "Drug Take Back Day."
Pedals for Progress collects 6,000 to 9,000 bicycles each year and transfers them to those less fortunate.
To date, more than 126,500 bikes have been shipped to countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe.
In these countries, the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low costs to poor, working adults.
The bikes provide them with reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting produce to the market, or accessing health care and other services.
Steady employment for these adults is vital to the development and success for these developing economies.
