  • The second annual 5K to benefit the Amy Stevens Foundation will be held Sept. 30 at St. Georges Technical High School.
The Amy C. Stevens Scholarship Foundation was founded for a St. Georges Tech student who was killed in a car crash in 2010.
Two scholarships will be awarded to two student athletes who excel academically.
Last year's proceeds went towards scholarships received by then seniors A.J. Ball and Ryanne Griffin.
Amy Stevens was 16 and a junior at St. Georges when her untimely death occurred.
On Oct. 28, 2010, Stevens was the passenger in a 1996 Mitsubishi that was involved in a crash on Del. Route 1.
The driver, Scot Emig, 17, of Bear, was also killed in the crash.
Police said that the crash occurred at around 3:15 p.m. that afternoon when Emig, who was traveling at a high rate of speed, attempted to make a lane change to avoid a slower vehicle in front of him.
He lost control of the car and struck a metal guardrail, according to police reports. The car overturned onto its roof.
Stevens was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police said, but Emig was not and he was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Stevens, who hailed from Newark, was an all-state athlete, a 4.0 student and her loss was a huge tragedy to the community, said Jessica Bloch, Stevens' coach from high school.
As a student, she was in the nursing program and already taking college courses in the field.
During its inaugural year in 2011, 391 people completed the 5K.
In addition to the 5K run/ walk Sunday; there will also be a raffle, which has prizes including Flyers tickets, and iPad and restaurant gift certificates.
    Refreshments will also be available.
Check in begins at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m.
St. Georges High School is located at 555 Hyetts Corner Road in Middletown.
