  • The Reedy Point Bridge will be closed from Oct. 8 until Oct. 26 so that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can continue maintenance work on it.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Oct. 8, the bridge will be completely closed off until the sand blasting and painting of the south half of the cantilever truss span is done on Friday, Oct. 26.
The Reedy Point Bridge on Del. Route 9 between New Castle Avenue and Reedy Point Road is the main gateway to Delaware City.
Detours will be set up for the duration of the project and all businesses in Delaware City will remain open.
Safety repairs on the bridge began in April and there have been temporary lanes closures or full bridge closures since then.
The work, which was announced by the Corp's Philadelphia district in February, raised concerns from residents and business owners past the bridge because of the 13-mile detour motorists would have to take to get to Delaware City and Port Penn.
The repair work includes fixing the welds, deteriorated steel members and the wind linkage.
Work is expected to be done this fall.
