  • New Castle County Police have arrested two subjects and charged them with drug offenses, after the vehicle that they were passengers in was stopped, and they were found to be in possession of marijuana and suspected drug money.

On Tuesday, September 25, detectives from the Mobile Enforcement Team (M.E.T.) were conducting proactive patrols in the community of Sparrow Run as well as the surrounding communities in order to address the recent crime in the area. At 9:19 p.m., they noticed a suspicious vehicle (white Lincoln Towncar) traveling through the community, before heading to the adjacent community of Wellington Woods. A short time later, the vehicle was stopped in the area of Commons Boulevard and Route 141 after it failed to signal.

As officers approached the vehicle, they could smell a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the car and observed the rear driver's side passenger, later identified as Torrence McCroey, acting suspiciously as he was seen reaching down toward his feet with both arms. Within moments, Corporal Stefani Cerkez and her canine partner "Max" responded to assist the officer and conducted a sniff of the vehicle which yielded a positive indication for the presence of a controlled dangerous substance.

The three occupants were then removed from the car and during a search, detectives discovered marijuana (114 grams) tucked under the rear of the driver's seat on the floor board of where McCroey was sitting in the vehicle. He was also found to be in possession of $432 of suspected drug money. Another passenger, later identified as Gerald Crooks, a 32 year old male who resides in the 100 block of Auckland Drive in the community of Wellington Woods in Newark, DE, was also found to be in possession of marijuana (14 grams) and $1806 of suspected drug money. The money was seized.

The driver, a 30 year old Newark man, was issued a citation and Gerald Crooks was issued a criminal summons, and both were released.

Torrence McCroey, a 28 year old man from the 300 block of Mederia Circle in Newark, DE, was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana and tampering with physical evidence.
