  • A 37-year-old New Castle man was killed in a crash on Del. Route 1 in Smyrna Oct. 8 after the truck he was a passenger in struck a parked camper and rolled onto its side.
Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day said that Michael G. Stigler, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, died at the scene.
The investigation by the Crash Reconstruction Unit determined that a 2010 Ford F250 with a camper attached to it was legally parked on the right shoulder of south bound Route 1, just south of the Paddock Road overpass.
At around 11:48 a.m., police said that a 2004 Hino panel truck, being operated by Goldwire Jackson, 63, of Wilmington, was traveling south on Route 1 in the right lane.
Stigler was in the truck's passenger seat when for an unknown reason; it drifted onto the shoulder and struck the rear of the parked camper.
Police said that after striking the camper, the truck rotated clockwise and onto its driver's side as it traveled into the grassy area on the west side of the roadway where it came to a rest.
Jackson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to the Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The occupants of the Ford, Anthony J. Zeigler, 74, and Kyong S. Zeigler, 71, both of Fleetwood, Pa. were not injured, police said.
As of Monday night, no charges had been filed in the incident.
The southbound lanes of Route 1 at Exit 119 were closed for nearly six hours when Trooper investigated and cleared the crash.
The crash remains under investigation, police said.
