  • The Delaware department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is holding a scrap tire drop off day Oct. 13 in Middletown.
The Saturday event is part of an effort to pitch in with recycling.
DNREC's ninth scrap tire recycling even will be held rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DelDOT's maintenance yard on Summit Bridge Road.
So far, DNREC has collected more than 22,700 scrap tires, weighing nearly 284 tons all together, for recycling.
Residents are encouraged to recycle scrap tires from passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks.
Up to 10 tires can be turned in per household.
Tires larger than 31 inches tall or on rims will not be accepted. Recyclers must show proof of Delaware residence.
Scrap tires are also an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, which spread the West Nile Virus, DNREC representatives said in a press release. Increased public participation in these events helps to promote the state's recycling efforts and reduces environmental and health hazards.
A West Nile Virus case was recently reported in the Middletown area, making the seventh in the state for 2012.
The Scrap Tire Management Program is funded by a state fee of $2 per tired on the sale of new tires.
For more information on the program and future scrap tire drop-off events, visit DNREC's website or contact the Scrap Tire Management Program at (302) 739-9403.
