Hometown rivals face off Friday
- Middletown's two hometown football teams will face off Friday night in what is expected to be a sold out game.
A sellout crowd is expected for the annual cross-town showdown between the Middletown and Appoquinimink high schools' football teams Friday night.
The undefeated Cavaliers (6-0) will travel just a few miles up the road to play their hometown rivals, the Jaguars (3-3), in the season's highly anticipated match-up between the two Middletown teams.
Now in its fourth year, the tradition began in 2009 when the Cavaliers beat the Jaguars 35-14 in a Sept. 11 game.
In 2010, Middletown beat Appoquinimink again, this time 18-7.
Last fall, the Cavaliers again came out on top, beating their hometown rivals 28-14 in the Oct. 21, 2011 game.
In the last four years, both teams have made it to the DIAA playoffs at least once.
The Jaguars fell to Archmere Academy in 2010 24-31 during the second round of the finals.
In 2011, the Cavaliers won the DIAA championship against Newark High School 27-23.
In 2010, they lost in the DIAA Division I Championship against St. Mark's High School after holding an 8-2 record for the season.
The split of the Appoquinimink School District's high school students into two different schools has created a rivalry in Middletown, with both of the district's teams vying to be the top seed.
This year's game will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at Jaguar Stadium at Appoquinimink High School.
With the large crowd expected, fans are encouraged to arrive to the game early and are strongly urged to carpool or ride share to the game, because parking will be limited.
Once the parking lots are filled, state police will be keeping additional vehicles from entering the schools property.
Police will also be patrolling nearby roadways and ticketing cars that are parked in the shoulder lanes, Appoquinimink School District officials said.
General admission is $5, and $3 for students.
