  • Everyone's favorite teenage redhead living in the ocean way deep, with fins for feet, will sit in the driver's seat of Premier Centre for the Arts' musical "The Little Mermaid Jr." on Friday.
Based on Disney's acclaimed animated film "The Little Mermaid," "Little Mermaid Jr." reintroduces Ariel the mermaid and her curiosity about the world on the surface — a world that includes the love of her life, Prince Eric. The show also includes Ariel's pals Flounder and Sebastian, and staple songs like "Under the Sea" and "Part of Your World."
Amber Rahman (Ariel), a sophomore at Appoquinimink High School, explained the similarities between her and Ariel, and more.
Q How excited are you to play Ariel in "The Little Mermaid Jr."?
A When I got the part, I was ecstatic; I never thought that I'd get it.
Q How does "The Little Mermaid Jr." differ from "The Little Mermaid" cartoon movie?
A Some of the scenes are a little different, and so are the words they say and how they're played out; and some of the songs are changed a little bit. But nothing is really extremely different.
Q Were newer songs added to the show?
A There are a couple of new songs added. "She's In Love" is a new song they put in the musical version and its sung by the Mersisters and Flounder, and it's talking about how Ariel's in love and everyone's freaking out because they don't know who it is.
Q What do you and Ariel share in common?
A Ariel's really into taking risks, and I think I'm like that myself. Ariel gets into little arguments with her parents, her father in this case, and I'm pretty sure every teenage girl knows what that's like.
Q Did you grow up a fan of "The Little Mermaid"?
A I was a fan of "The Little Mermaid" and of all the Disney princesses. My older sister is a huge fan of "The Little Mermaid," so that's what kind of made me want to try out for this even more.
Q What's it like singing on stage next to a big yellow fish?
A I love it. The girl playing Flounder, Alexis [Anibal], is hilarious. She's one of my really good friends in the cast. She's a really great actress and she's really fun to work with.
Q Can you describe the different types of creatures we'll see in the show?
A There's a lot of different creatures, especially during the "Kiss the Girl" scene. We have flamingos, dolphins and turtles. There's a lot of different sorts of fish, too. And, of course, there's Sebastian the lobster. It's really cool when you see it all come together.
Page 2 of 2 - Q Name your favorite song from the show.
A I'd like to say it's "Part of Your World" [laughs]. It's Ariel's main song and it really explains her feelings on how she wants to go up to the surface and see everything there is to see; I think that's really cool.
