The accident happened at about 10:05 p.m., near Vintage Drive, according to Middletown Police.
Pauline Stoneback, 81, of Orefield, Pa., was driving a 2006 Toyota Prius, and pulled out of the north Walmart entrance, traveling north but in the southbound lane of Route 301, police said.
Her car collided head-on with a Peterbilt tractor trailer that was empty, traveling south on southbound Route 301. The car spun counter clockwise and stopped about 100 feet south of the point of impact.
Stoneback was trapped in the car. She was removed by firefighters from Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown and then flown by state police helicopter to Christiana Hospital. She suffered compound fractures to her leg and hip, and was listed in stable condition, police said.
Stoneback was charged with inattentive driving and expired tags, police said.
