  • Smyrna Town Council approved a $2,500 donation at their Nov. 19 meeting to the Smyrna-Clayton Ministerium to go towards helping victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Council had previously discussed donating money to storm victims in New Jersey or New York at their Nov. 5 meeting. Councilwoman Joanne Masten had suggested sending a local town crew up to the areas damaged to assist with the clean up and getting electric back up. When this was determined to not be a good idea with a small staff, Masten suggested donating money to the American Red Cross.
The recommendation was sent to the Finance Committee for further discussion. The discussion within the committed led Town Manager Dave Hugg to suggest the council to donate to local victims.
"There are folks in Woodland Beach, Leipsic, Little Creek, and Bowers Beach who suffered every bit as much damage to their homes and lives as others," Hugg said. "And I would like to see us make, if we make a contribution, make it so the folks in this area are immediately assisted."
