  • One man was injured and trapped after a collision between a tractor trailer and a box truck shut down part of northbound Route 1 on the Roth Bridge Thursday night.
The crash occurred at about 9:17 p.m., State Police said.
Elving A. Hinojosa, 60, of Dumfries, Va., was driving a 1999 Volvo tractor trailer and was entering Route 1 northbound from the on-ramp south of the Roth Bridge.
As the tractor trailer traveled in the right lane on the bridge, it was struck in the back by a 2006 Chevrolet box truck driven by Joseph B. Shreves, 35, of Ellendale.
The impact caused the box truck to travel across the center and left lanes of Route 1 northbound, and strike the bridge's concrete median. The tractor trailer was able to stop safely on the right shoulder of the bridge.
Hinojosa, who was properly restrained, was not injured.
Shreves, who was properly restrained, was transported to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center by State Police helicopter.
Cpl. Peter Small from New Castle County Paramedics said the box truck driver was trapped in the vehicle for approximately 40 minutes before being extricated by personnel from the Delaware City Fire Company. The Odessa Fire Company also responded to the emergency.
New Castle County paramedics treated the driver on scene for leg injuries and possible internal injuries.
State Police said Shreves was treated for leg injuries at the hospital and released.
Shreves was cited for inattentive driving, police said.
Several lanes of Route 1 northbound were closed for about three hours as police investigated and cleared the crash.
