Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent was jailed Saturday and charged with intoxicated manslaughter after he was behind the wheel during a car accident that killed teammate Jerry Brown early Saturday, ESPN reports.

According to local police, Brent's car was traveling on a local State Highway in Cincinnati, where the Cowboys are playing this weekend, before it hit the outside curb at approximately 2:30 a.m. The car flipped at least one time and skidded before coming to a halt in the middle of the service road. When police arrived, Brent was attempting to pull his teammate from the burning car. Police then conducted a field-sobriety test on Brent and arrested him.

Brown, a practice squad linebacker for the Cowboys, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was 25. "I am devastated and filled with grief," Brent, 24, said in a statement through his agent. "Filled with grief for the loss of my close friend and teammate, Jerry Brown. I am also grief-stricken for his family, friends and all who were blessed enough to have known him. I will live with this horrific and tragic loss every day for the rest of my life. My prayers are with his family, our teammates and his friends at this time."

Brown and Brent both attended University of Illinois and played together on the school football team. "We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. "At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

There will be a moment of silence before the Cowboys' game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday to honor Brown.

This is the second NFL death in less than a week, following the suicide of Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher, who committed suicide at the team's stadium after fatally shooting his girlfriend.

If found guilty of intoxicated manslaughter, Brent faces up to 20 years in prison.
