The Sussex Tech Ravens basketball team literally flew past Appoquinimink Monday night defeating the Jaguars 77-61.
"That's a team with an amazing amount of speed," said Jaguar coach Stephen Landry. The Jags had the height advantage at the outset, but their defense was struggling with the Ravens' speed.
"They were running past us, running through the gaps, and that forced us to go to a smaller lineup to try to keep up with them," he said.
The Ravens got a huge early jump and led 12-2 in the first six minutes of the game before all the spectators were settled in their seats. Sussex Tech was led in the first quarter by the hot hands and quick feet of sophomore guard Charles Hopkins and junior Dwayne Hopkins.
"We worked together very well tonight and our passing was pretty good, too," said Charles Hopkins, who led all scorers with 28 points.
The Ravens kept up the barrage in the second quarter with their lightening quick attack that was very efficient due to some pin-point, crisp passing. During one stretch, Tech scored 15 straight points to build a commanding lead. By halftime Sussex Tech was in control 43-22.
The third quarter was similar to the first half, with Charles Hopkins running the floor and hitting shots from all over the court. The Ravens defense was also effective holding the Jags to 13 points at this critical time.
Appoquinimink finally began to counterattack in the fourth quarter, with senior Michael Gordon moving the ball around the court and scoring a number shots. The last period featured lots of end to end action, and at one point, the Jags cut the led down to 15, but they just ran out of time in a valiant effort to catch up to the high-flying Ravens.
"We did a great job applying pressure in the fourth quarter, and I'm proud that we worked hard for the entire 48 minutes and finished strong," said Landry.
The Jaguars are now 1-4 on the season and next host Delcastle on Wednesday evening at 5:45 p.m. They will visit William Penn in New Castle on Tuesday, Dec. 18th.
The Ravens are 4-0 and will try to stay undefeated on the road against Cape Henlopen Friday, Dec. 14th at 7:15 p.m.
