The Appoquinimink School Board has named Melisa Stilwell as the new principal for both Cedar Lane Campus schools.
Stilwell, a graduate of Middletown High School, will oversee the Elementary School and the Early Childhood Center.
"Melisa brings a wealth of knowledge to her new position, including experience in teaching in private, charter and public school settings," said Lilian Miles, a spokeswoman for the district.
Stilwell is not new to Appoquinimink.
Not only has she spent several years teaching at Townsend Elementary School, but also she attended there as a child.
Stilwell then went on to attend middle school at Louis L. Redding and high school at Middletown.
Recently, Stilwell entered the Appoquinimink Aspiring Administrator's Program. She graduated from the program and first worked as an administrative intern at Townsend Elementary School and later as an Assistant Principal at both Cedar Lane schools.
She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Early Education and two Master's Degrees – Instruction and Applied Technology.
Stilwell is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership.
"In her new role, she hopes to create more opportunities to co-mingle the two schools, including bringing the school's popular character education program to the kindergarten center," Miles said.
She will also be reaching out to "rising kindergarteners" with home visitations this spring and summer.
