The Middletown wrestlers put on a good show Wednesday in narrowly defeating two tough opponents on the same night in their home gym. In the first match of the night, the Cavaliers edged Indian River 41-36. Then, after a short rest period, they defeated crosstown rival Appoquinimink High School by the score of 48-30.
After the first few events in the second match, the Cavaliers built a 12-0 lead, but the Jaguars would come roaring back to take a 21-12 lead on pins by Josh Smith and Andrew Hughes. But Middletown would regain the momentum on a pin by Carter McClung in the 152 lb. division. Appo would eventually tie the score at 30-30 on a pin by Brandon Pretlow in the 195 lb. division, but the Cavaliers would win the last two weight classes by forfeit to win the match on points, 48-30.
Jaguar coach Chris Smith said he thought his team wrestled very well. "We have lot of guys that are sick or have minor injuries, which sometimes happens this time of year. We didn't want to forfeit any of those matches tonight, but we didn't have anyone ready to wrestle in those weight divisions," he said.
Appoquinimink is now 3-5 in dual meet competitions. Their next match will be on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Hodgson Vo-Tech beginning at 6 p.m. The 4-0 Cavaliers will participate in the Green Knight Classic this Saturday, January 19 at Mt. Pleasant High School starting at 9 a.m.
