Two Middletown women will walk 60 miles around Philadelphia in October to help support Breast Cancer awareness in the Susan G. Komen three-day walk.
Patti King, 46, and Donna Doyle, 49, who are next door neighbors, will also be holding their first fund raiser to help support their efforts Jan. 26 at the Bob Evans in Middletown.
They decided to do the walk in memory of their loved ones.
"I have five sisters and two of them were diagnosed with breast cancer this past year and I knew I had to do this walk for them and for my mother-in-law who died from breast cancer," Doyle said.
King will also be walking in memory of her friend's sisters and mother, and also in memory of her husband's grandmother, Elsie Burnett.
"We kind of talked each other over the fence and decided to take the plunge and do the walk together," she said.
Their team name is I-rish for a Cure.
It will both of their first times doing the three-day walk, so they are sticking with the 24- week training program provided by Susan G. Komen, which begins in April.
In the meantime, they are walking as much as possible.
"I'm preparing by continuing to walk as much as possible during the week and on weekends with my husband and teammate," Doyle said.
Doyle has wanted to do the walk for years, and she said that this year it was just meant to be.
Each walker is required to raise a minimum of $2,300, but team I-rish for a Cure plans on exceeding that.
Doyle and King have set a goal of $5,000.
Donations can be made to the pages each of them has set up, or during one of their upcoming fundraisers.
They will also be selling shirts, bracelets and more to help reach their goal, King said.
Statistics show that about every 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that it is the second leading cause of death in women.
"As a mom of three boys, with a husband that has a family history of cancer, I worry for them," Doyle said.
Every 74 seconds, someone dies from cancer, statistics also show.
"I have a 16 year old daughter and I don't want PINK to be the color to wear when she is older," King said. "We will find a cure before then!"
