State Troopers seized more than 31 grams of heroin Jan. 11 during a traffic stop south of the Biddles Toll Plaza on Del. Route 1 near Middletown.
Michael A. Denney, 27, of Rehoboth Beach, was arrested after police found a large cache of heroin in his vehicle, police said.
A trooper patrolling the area near the toll plaza stopped Denney for driving his 2003 Mercury Sable above the speed limit at around 2 p.m. Friday.
The officers said that Denney did not have a valid driers license and ordered him to exit the vehicle.
When Denney stepped out of the car, the Trooper noticed a small wax envelope, which police said is commonly used to package heroin, on the car floor.
Denney's two female passengers exited the car, allowing the Trooper to see more drug paraphernalia in the car.
A search of the car turned up 31.1 grams of heroin stored in 1,244 wax envelopes, police said.
Police issued both female passengers a criminal summons after finding them in possession of drug paraphernalia.
Denney was charged with possession of a controlled substance and intent to deliver, driving with a suspended license, speeding, and failing to have proof of insurance Jan. 16 after police investigated the source of the heroin and its destination.
He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute on $18,550 cash bail.
