  • A combination of Middletown High School's strong defense and hot shooting, paired with a cold shooting night by Delcastle Technical High School, resulted in a 65-48 victory for the Cavaliers boys' basketball team Tuesday night.
The Cavaliers seem to be catching fire right now as the team has won eight of their last nine games to improve their record to 10-3. Their only loss since the holiday break was to Concord in late December.
Speaking of fire, the Middletown offense peppered Delcastle with 7 three-pointers on the night, a trend that has kept the Cavaliers in the win column.
The Cavs opened the contest with a three-pointer and kept firing away after that in building a 15-6 lead after the first quarter. Give lots of credit also to the Middletown defense that has developed a swarming, hard-nose, "in-your-face" style that keeps opponents from getting easy shots.
Delcastle found precious little space to work their offense after the first quarter, but overall had a tough shooting night, even missing on a handful of uncontested shots under the basket. A lot of that had to do with the Cavalier defense that has played very well in the month of January. At halftime, the Cougars trailed 26-17.
In the second half, Middletown continued to spread the ball around, giving Delcastle's defense fits regarding which shooter to cover. That's even more difficult when a team like the Cavaliers has four shooters in double figures for the game.
In the third period, both teams went up-tempo on offense as Delcastle scored 17 points to match its output from the first half, but still trailed 44-34.
The quick pace continued into the fourth quarter as Delcastle made a small run, but Middletown kept the hot hand and gradually pulled away from the Cougars despite a strong night from junior Derrick McNair who led all scorers with 19 points. Karran Newsome added 12 points for Delcastle, who's next game is a home contest against William Penn on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 5:15 p.m.
Khai Roberts was the top scorer for Middletown with 16 points. He was helped on offense by Joe Bamfo's 14 points, and Sar Sambo and James Sells, who both netted 13 points. The Cavaliers' next game is on the road on Thursday, Jan. 24 at Blue Hen Conference rival, Newark.
