St. Georges Tech wrestlers finished second in the Canal Classic held Saturday at Middletown High School.
The Tournament was pushed back a day because of Friday's icy weather conditions.
The St. Georges wrestling squad battled to a second place finish in the Canal Classic Wrestling Tournament held Saturday at Middletown High School. Sussex Central was the overall winner with 211 points. The Golden Knights had one champion, Keith Jones, who won the 182 lb. weight class. In addition, Central grabbed 3 seconds, 2 thirds, 2 fourths, 1 fifth and 3 sixth place winners. The fifth and sixth place wrestlers were key to the Golden Knights taking home the championship trophy.
The Hawks finished a close second on the strength of one first place finish by Jake Chilson in the 113 lb. weight division, 3 second-place finishes, 4 third-place finishes, 1 fourth- place finishes and 3 wrestlers achieved fifth place during the match.
Middletown's top finisher was senior Jake Vick at 120 lbs. Appoquinimink had one champion, Andrew Hughes, who was the top wrestler at 138 lbs.
Dover High had two first place winners, Jordan Olfus at 126 lbs., and Isaiah Abrams at 185 lbs.
Malvern Prep, from Pennsylvania, had 6 first place champions to wind up in third place overall.
The Tournament was scheduled to begin Friday evening, but was pushed back to a one-day event because of the icy, snowy conditions around the region. Tournament spokesman Steve Lex, who is the new director of the annual Beast of the East Tournament, said the event was pushed back to Saturday morning out of concern for the wrestlers, their families and all of the wrestling fans who attended the tournament.
