  • The Middletown boys' basketball team had its' offense on full throttle from start to finish in a fast-paced 71-56 home victory over neighboring Appoquinimink Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers broke their two game losing streak and improved to 12-5 on the season. The Jaguars record fell to 4-12.
Action was definitely fast and furious during the first eight minutes, as the full house of fans were cheering at full volume for the two backyard opponents.
Middletown held the lead throughout the entire contest, but Appoquinimink kept it a close. The turning point came when Sambo received a long lead pass, and then slammed home a dunk for a 58-44 lead, and the Cavaliers were not threatened after that. The Jaguars hustled for four quarters, but could not stay up with their hosts.
"Any time you play against Appoquinimink, you have to go with the flow. These guys all know each other, so you know you have to play hard for 32 minutes," said Middletown coach Jasen Maciey. "And I think our seniors showed good poise and leadership out on the court this afternoon," he added.
The Cavaliers raced out to an 11-4 behind the playmaking of guard Sar Sambo. But gradually, the Jaguars chipped away at the lead and got within striking distance at 23-13 after one period.
The pace remained the same in the second period, with both teams running and gunning, and bringing the crowd to its collective feet several times on playmaking and the incredible tempo. Appoquinimink's offense kept the visitors in the game, but the Cavs led 43-32 at the half.
The Jaguars defense held Middletown in check in the third period, allowing the Cavaliers on 7 points, to close the gap to 51-44, setting up the exciting fourth quarter.
The Cavaliers next contest will be on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 5:15 p.m. The Jaguars will host Newark on Thursday, beginning at 5:45 p.m.
