With live performances, a smorgasbord of food samplings and more — St. Anne's Episcopal School will serve as ground zero for entertainment next Thursday, during Middletown Area Chamber of Commerce's fifth annual Spring Expo: "A Tribute to Arts & Entertainment."
The Expo, a free event, is slated to feature more than 80 vendors from the Delaware region — spanning mass media, financial services, business services, marketing, child care, health care, home care, home products, artists and restaurants. The goal of the event is to offer an opportunity for sponsors, corporate exhibitors and vendors to promote their businesses to the surrounding community.
The theme of this year's event is arts and entertainment. Hence, new to the Expo will be arts and entertainment such as line dancing by members of the M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center and theatrical performances by Middletown High School and Appoquinimink High School students, said Sital Soni, chairwoman of the Expo and board member of MACC.
Sital, 41, of Middletown, added there will also be contributions by other area schools like St. Anne's Episcopal School, M.O.T. Charter, as well as artwork provided by the Gilbert W. Perry, Jr. Center for the Arts, local artists and a surprise performance by the Premier Centre for the Arts.
List of 17 food vendors
A staple from last year's event was the inaugural "Taste of Local Cuisines" component, which will return next Thursday. "Taste of Local Cuisines" offers samples of cuisines and beverages from 17 confirmed food vendors including: Pretzel Boys, Fromage, Dogtown, Immediatos Italian Specialties, The Right Bottle, The Grille at Back Creek Golf Club and Pats Select Pizza Grill, Soni said.
Other "Taste of" vendors will include Crossroads Restaurant, Frog Hollow Golf Club, Golden Apple Caterers, Odessa National Golf Club, Saladworks, Gauge Nutrition, Young's BBQ, Purple Sage Herbs & Gifts, Ice Cream Shoppe, and Half Baked Patisserie, a new pastry shop slated to open soon on Main Street.
Brandon Gentry, executive chef of The Grille at Back Creek Golf Club, presented samples of his specialty crab cakes (made from blue crab meat) at last year's Expo. This year Gentry says he'll offer samples of his crab cakes and crab soup (also made from blue crab).
Since The Grille is located on the outskirts of Middletown, Gentry noted that participating in last year's event allowed him to create more awareness about the restaurant, as it was then brought to his attention that a number of Expo attendees had no clue The Grille was located in Middletown.
"We found we needed to do more advertising, and it was a good way for us to make contact [with the public]," said Gentry, 40, of Earleville, Md. "We definitely got our name out there and it helped us."
