Over the weekend, the top wrestlers in the state gathered at Cape Henlopen for the 2013 DIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament championship.
Michael Albanese of St. Georges Tech was the local standout; finishing second overall in the state at 170lbs. Albanese lost to Smyrna’s Zach Boyles, by a 7-2 decision, the win for Boyles was his second career state championship.
Albanese defeated Micky Mondestin of Lake Forest, Justin Lopez of Cape Henlopen and Seth Brosius of Caesar Rodney to advance to the finals before falling to Boyles.
The rest of the standout St. Georges Tech team had a very respectable tournament. Jake Chilson earned 3rd place in the state at 113lbs, Brandon Hurd took home 4th at 106lbs, while David Talley (145lbs) and Rocco Hladney (160lbs) took home 5th place honors for the Hawks.
The Middletown Cavaliers had 3 wrestlers place in the top 6 in their weight class over the weekend. Jake Vick took home 4th place at 120lbs, Erich Schneider 5th place at 170lbs, and Austin Brant took home 6th in the state at 220lbs.
Appoquinimink’s lone top 6 finisher was Andrew Hughes who finished 4th in the state at 138lbs.
