W. Glenn Hammond, 84, of Middletown, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE with his loving family by his side.
Born on June 26, 1928 in Georgetown, DE, he was the son of the late William Benjamin and Beatrice (Hood) Hammond.
Glenn was a graduate of Rehoboth High School and Goldey Beacom College. He worked as a postal clerk with the U.S. Post Office in Rehoboth Beach in his earlier years. In October of 1950, he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served with the 1707th Air Police Squadron.
On February 22, 1968, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane Lindell. Together they raised two sons.
Glenn was retired from Johnson Controls where he worked as a financial analyst. Following retirement, he worked part-time with Happy Harry's in Middletown.
He was an avid Phillies' fan and loved watching and listening to University of Delaware football. Together with his wife, he enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and meticulously completed many jigsaw puzzles. Through their love for travel they enjoyed many cruises where they had the opportunity to visit every continent. Glenn was a member of the Mariner Society with Holland America Line.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Barney.
Glenn leaves many fond memories to his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Jane; two sons, W. Gary Hammond and his wife, Laurie and Gregg Alan Hammond and his wife, Kelli; four grandchildren, Miranda, Georgia, Ben and Libby, as well as many dear friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 pm on Monday, March 4, at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where friends may visit with his family one hour prior. Interment will follow with military honors at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
