The Appoquinimink School District's two-part referendum will go to a vote today. The referendum, which has been met with mixed reviews by district residents, was designed to address the more than $4 million in state funding cuts suffered by the district.
The school district is asking residents to support a property tax increase that would support operating expenses, such as upgrading student materials and technology, as well as a variety of maintenance projects.
Residents are also being asked to approve the implementation of middle school sports, which would include volleyball, cross country, basketball and wrestling. According to the Appoquinimink School District, if approved, this line item could only take effect if the first part of the referendum passes as well.
If both parts of the referendum are approved, property owners could expect a sliding tax increase between 2013 and 2016. The average property owner in the district (with a home assessed at about $87,500) could expect a property tax increase of $19.05 per month with taxes totaling $228.64 in 2013. By 2016, the increase would total $27.07 per month, with taxes totaling $324.89 per year, according to district officials.
The following polling locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. To be eligible to vote, the person must be a a U.S. and Delaware citizen, be at least 18 years old and live in the Appoquinimink School District.
