An Elkton, Md. woman who owns the Live Love and Dance Studio in Middletown was arrested on identity theft charges on Thursday after a month-long investigation found that she used a customer's debit card number to pay for a hotel room during a trip she took to California and other purchases.
On Feb. 4, New Castle County Police Detective Perry Sorrels was assigned to a case involving the unlawful use of a credit card, police said. Since the case was assigned, detectives learned that , Asa Jones, 40, of the 200 block of Patriots Way in Elkton, Md., and owner of Live Love and Dance Studio on W. Main St. in Middletown, had used the credit card information of one of her customer's to purchase airplane tickets, a hotel room, and a helicopter ride while on her trip to California.
The 35-year-old Townsend woman, whose credit card Jones used, was the mother of a student at the Live Love and Dance Studio who had been attending the studio since the end of last summer, said Cpl. John Weglarz Sr., spokesman for the New Castle County Police Department.
Detectives and members from the Elkton Police Department went to Jones' residence on Thursday after obtaining an arrest warrant for Jones and a search warrant for her home. When officers arrived, they made contact with Jones, and she was immediately taken into custody without incident, Weglarz said.
During a search of the home, police found evidence inside the residence that would help to link Jones to the crimes and they also located evidence pertaining to other possible victims of identity theft, Weglarz said. A search was also completed at the Live Love and Dance Studio in Middletown, which yielded further evidence of Jones' criminal activity.
Jones is currently being held by the Elkton Police Department and is awaiting her extradition to Delaware.
