The 74 year-old stage at New Candlelight has scoliosis. It needs long overdue chiropractic. It is the theatrical equivalent of the sway back mare.
After founders John & Lena O'Toole and Julian & Annabelle Borris retired, the dinner theatre limped along and was a but a 'droplet of mare's sweat' ( one of the funniest images from Candlelight's 1969 opening show FORUM ) away from closure. The 40 years of sweat and blood that the four theatrical pioneers invested would have been nothing but sweet memories.
Next Saturday we all have the opportunity to be doctors for the evening and help to build a new stage; one that is worthy of this professional theatre that has been a gift to our community for the past two years when the entity became non-profit.
Aisle Say feels privileged to have been in attendance at every opening night for these past two years. Taking my medical imagery further.... if laughing strengthens the heart, well then I get a fantastic workout every 5 weeks or so.
New Candlelight Theatre is going "All-In" on March 23, 2013 with their BARNY Gala with a Vegas theme, performances by some of NCT’s finest actors singing the show stopping numbers from last year's shows. If that were not enough, after the Broadway acts are concluded, a legendary rock n' roll group, The Fabulous Greaseband, will close out the right with a whole lotta jitterbuggers on the dance floor.
Like the TONY Awards, the BARNYS celebrate the great performances of last season by awarding such honors as Best Actress in a Musical and Best Show. NCT performers include Lindsay Mauck, Victoria Healy, David Snyder, Colleen McGinnis and Sharon Brown Ruegsegger.
Other highlights of the evening will include gourmet dinner, silent auction and table games (just for fun). The Barny Awards will be hosted by Delaware’s own Scott Mason as Dame Edna’s Honorary Impersonator.
Says Development Director Peter Briccotto, "Our company has commissioned EDiS and Macintosh engineering to complete the study of existing structure and planning for the new structure. In reality, the stage is not particularly safe. And it's a Homeric challenge for set designers."
NCT is also seeking Silent Auction items and small ticket give-aways. Call Maureen in the boxoffice.

CLUB PHRED at The Queen on March 21
While we are on the subject of bodacious local bands, Club Phred's covers of the '60's and '70's hits create energy on the dance floor like Dorothy's tornado.
They play The Queen on Thursday March 21 at 8pm. Only a $6.00 cover. It's a fund raiser for the non-profit element of The Queen. Over the years, Club Phred has helped to generate $2.2 million dollars for area non-profits.
