A Port Penn man died early Tuesday after his sports utility vehicle struck a concrete pole off of Bayview Road, northeast of Odessa.
Harry C. Spohn, 42, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe east on Bayview Road, about a quarter mile west of Betts Road, just before 1:40 a.m., when the vehicle left the southern edge of the roadway and struck the pole, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day said.
After the collision, the Tahoe continue traveling east while spinning counterclockwise before striking a tree on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Spohn, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Tahoe, which eventually came to a stop on Bayview Road.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Day said it is not clear what caused the Tahoe to leave the roadway. An investigation is ongoing.
Bayview Road was closed for about three hours while state police investigated the crash and cleared the roadway.
