  • Middletown farmer Bill Alfree recently helped St. Andrew’s School win a $2,500 donation from the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company.
Alfree was randomly selected by the Monsanto Fund’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities program to direct the donation to his favorite local nonprofit organization.
Alfree, who has been growing corn, soy, wheat and hay on about 350 acres of the school’s 1,200-acre property since 1992, said he chose St. Andrew’s to receive the donation because of their efforts to promote environmental sustainability.
Tad Roach, the headmaster at the 300-student boarding school, said the donation would be used to support reforestation efforts around Silver Lake and sustainable agricultural practices.
This year, the Monsanto Fund’s Grow Communities program will distribute more than $5 million to nonprofit groups in 1,271 counties in 39 states.
