  • St. Georges baseball team accomplished two objectives in one game Tuesday afternoon when they defeated Appoquinimink 8-7: The Hawks snapped the Jaguars modest two game winning streak, and they remained undefeated in their first two games of the 2013 season.
The Hawks scratched out a run in the top of the first off Jags' starter Anthony Modica to take the early lead, but Appo came storming back to score three in the bottom of the frame. When the Jags scored another run in the second, it appeared Modica was on his way to victory.
But the Hawks had other ideas, as they scored two in the top of the fourth, then added five more in the fifth off of Jag reliever Ryan Deshaies and Josh Silvestri to take an 8-5 lead.
"Anthony Modica pitched pretty well for us today, and he only gave up three runs," said Jaguar coach Charles Word. "But we didn't play as well as we could defensively, and that cost us some runs," he said.
The Jaguars three errors eventually cost the team three unearned runs and a chance for the team's third win.
Appo would go on to score two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but St. Georges' pitchers were able to seal the victory.
"It was a back and forth game, and I was pleased with our effort today, but we gave up five runs in the fifth, and that was what ultimately beat us," said Word.
Sean McGrath got the save for the Hawks in relief of starter Lance Gilbert, who pitched out of several jams through the first four innings. McGrath also went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. Jimmy Woodward went 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored for St. Georges.
Appo's DeVante' Parker went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, and Connor Stevens made several fine defense plays during the game.
The Hawks are now 2-0 on the season, and will participate in the Tiger Classic at A.I. DuPont HS this weekend.
Their next home game is Monday against Pencader Charter at 4 p.m. The Jaguars dropped to 2-1 and will play Delcastle HS on the road Thursday at 3:45 p.m.
