  • William "Bill" Blackwell, 76, of Middletown, DE, “The Man with the Golden Hands”, as he was called in a newspaper article written by News Journal Columnist Kathy Canavan, during his many years working as a produce manager for Food Fair/Pantry Pride, sadly passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013 after a very brief three week illness of brain cancer.
    Born on July 6, 1936 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Herrell) and William H. Blackwell, Sr.
    Bill worked for 50 years as a well respected produce manager at Food Fair/Pantry Pride, Thriftway and ended his career at Genuardis Food Markets in Bear DE.  For the last 19 years he owned and operated, along with his wife, Wildflowers By Alicia, in Middletown, DE
    He loved work, being around people and especially loved his family.  Bill was a proud hard working man and was respected and loved by everyone who knew him. He had a great passion for baseball and his idle, Robin Roberts, was who he named his son after.  He will be missed every day.
    In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde, and Claude; three brothers-in-law, Jack Williams, Donald Emel and Justin McCarthy and a sister-in-law, Sonja McCarthy.
    Bill is survived by his wife, Alicia "Gracie" McCarthy Blackwell; son, Robin R. Blackwell and his wife, Christine; step-daughter, Shannon Harris; grandchildren, Stacey, Joshua and his wife, Heather and Riley Boyer; great-grandchildren Lacey, Haley, and Wesley Blackwell; a sister,  Emma Williams; four sisters-in-law, Georgia Blackwell, Margaret McCarthy,  Irene Emel and Mary Ellen Chambers; three brothers-in law, Dean Chambers, Tommy and Charles McCarthy, as well as by many special nieces and nephews and his buddy, Bob Ferguson.
    Funeral services will be held noon on Wednesday, April 10 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where friends may visit with Bill’s family from 6-9 pm on Tuesday evening, April 9 and two hours prior to funeral services on Wednesday.  Bill will be laid to rest in Old Drawyers Cemetery near Odessa, DE.
