A 25-year-old Maryland man is facing criminal charges after allegedly being found in possession of heroin during a traffic stop in Middletown on Saturday.
James Cleary of Chestertown was the passenger in a vehicle that a Middletown police officer stopped on East Lake Street, just east of Caribou Lane, about 1 p.m. for an undisclosed traffic violation, Middletown police said.
During the traffic stop, the officer reportedly noticed a “suspicious object” in Cleary’s front pocket, which the Maryland man attempted to cover with his T-shirt.
The officer searched Cleary and found 65 individually wrapped packets of heroin in his pocket, police said.
Cleary reportedly attempted to flee but was subdued and taken into custody.
He is charged with possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington on a $10,300 secured bond, police said.
