  • Esther S. Smith, age 82 of Middletown, DE passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 surrounded by her family. Esther was born in Middletown and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah Spicer. She attended Middletown High School and was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Volunteer Hose Co. She was employed in her earlier life in area department stores. She retired to take care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and dedicated her life to caring for her beloved family. She enjoyed being a talented homemaker and seamstress. She was also a fantastic cook and enjoyed preparing large family dinners and the gatherings that followed. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 64 years, Jack Smith, 2 children William Smith of Townsend, Beverley Pitcher (Robert) of Middletown; 2 sisters Barney Whitlock and Mary Ellen Gove, 4 grandchildren Jerry Smith (Terri), Sarah McBride (Jerry), Jenn Atkinson (Thomas), and Christopher Pitcher; 6 great grandchildren Jonathan, Sean, Ashlynn, Patrick, Thomas and Jessica and 5 great, great grandchildren Destiny, Tyler, Brittany, Bella and Liam. In addition to her parents Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by three sisters Elizabeth Carey, Margaret Golder and Jeanette Thompson, three brothers Leland Spicer, Samuel Spicer and Charles Spicer and daughter-in-law Patricia Smith. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Saturday June 1, 2013 at Daniels & Hutchinson Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, DE from 11:30 am – 1pm followed by a service in celebration of Mrs. Smith’s life at 1pm. Interment will be in the Forest Cemetery. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions can be made to Middletown Baptist Church, 419 Armstrong Corner Road, Middletown, DE 19709.
