  • An Appoquinimink High School teacher accused of exposing himself to a woman last month has been arrested in connection with a similar incident that occurred a few weeks earlier.
Charles Word, a 31-year-old Newark resident who’s worked as physical education teacher and varsity baseball coach at the high school, turned himself in Friday to face a new charge of indecent exposure, according to Delaware State Police.
He later was released on an unsecured $500 bail.
Word was allegedly behind the wheel of a vehicle that pulled alongside a 45-year-old woman stopped at a red light at the intersection of North Harmony and Ogletown Stanton roads near Christiana about 8:30 p.m. on May 1.
The woman later told police she heard the driver of the adjacent vehicle ask, “How do you like it,” and witnessed the man masturbating while looking at pornography on a laptop computer, Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day said.
State police obtained a warrant for Word’s arrest following his arrest on indecent exposure and harassment charges on May 19.
In that incident, Word is accused of exposing himself to a 22-year-old woman from the driver’s seat of a silver Dodge Charger on Chapel Street in Newark about 6:15 a.m.
The victim in that incident walked away before Word allegedly pulled up to her a second time and attempted to engage her in a conversation.
Newark police said they were later able to use surveillance camera footage to obtain the registration number of the Dodge and identity Word as the driver.
He was arrested at his home and later released on a $4,000 unsecured bail.
Word also was placed on administrative leave by the Appoquinimink School District following his May 19 arrest and has been barred from visiting school grounds or having any contact with the Appoquinimink High School baseball team.
