Producer/Director Jeff Santoro was appreciative when Aisle Say suggested a review of DE All State Theatre's last night opening of JEKYL and HYDE, but he passed. My take was that he was concerned a negative comment would affect an actor and have untoward consequences on perhaps a blossoming career.

He should not have worried!

DAST, under Santoro, Deb Johnson and Music Director David Snyder - both artistically and technically  - surpassed productions in most longtime (adult) community theatres in Delaware.

This is not your FORUM, your PRODUCERS, your SPAMALOT. This is a dark, dramatic musical dealing with  malevolence, mayhem and murder; scarcely themes one might consider for junior high and high school students. But DAST takes risks that high school drama teachers cannot.

The 3 leads NAILED their parts.  Chad Michael Jervis (Dr. Jekyl/Edward Hyde) displayed a sonorous high baritone. Jekyl's signature song "This Is The Moment" is so superbly written, with two octave changes culminating in a great crescendo. Jervis was spectacular.  To understate, this role is challenging, changing at will from the saintly do-good doctor to the barbarous Hyde.  His crouching attitude, his voice, his hand movements for the latter made one forget he could ever be the godlike doctor as well.

Kristina Biddle's (Sara)  beauty as an actor paralleled her beauty as a singer in the melodious "Once Upont A Dream". Her duet with Lucy (Kayla Saunders) "In His Eyes" was one of several show stoppers.

Saunders role as a prostitute, one would surmise, might be 180 degrees from anything she portrayed at Cab Calloway.  She handled that with aplomb and professionalism. Her gorgeous voice is that of a mature adult, being given a great platform in "Someone Like You" and "A New Life".

Yes, it was a warm audience on opening night with legions of Moms and Dada and Aunts and Uncles. However, there is NO doubt that the Standing O will be replicated with each performance.

The show is at the beautiful Laird Theatre at Tatnall School. It is a huge auditorium. Don't necessarily worry about obtaining tickets beforehand

 Through 30 June. 7:30 evenings. DASTonline.com
