Bunker Hill Elementary's newest principal will be a familiar face to the students, parents and staff at the school.
Laurie J. Wicks, who has served as the assistant principal at Bunker Hill since it opened in 2009, has been hired succeed current principal Jeff Davis, who is moving to Virginia later this summer, district officials announced Monday.
"Being a part of developing the culture of this school has been humbling," Wicks said in a prepared statement. "Knowing that I will have an opportunity to continue building on that foundation as the school's next principal is a wonderful feeling. I plan to continue the initiatives that are having a positive impact and promise parents and students that we won't miss a beat at BHE next year."
Prior to joining the staff at Bunker Hill, Wicks spent 14 years as a teacher and math specialist at Silver Lake Elementary School. During that time, she was named a district Teacher of the Year and became one of the state's first Nationally Board Certified Teachers.
She also has been a state finalist for the Presidential Award for Elementary Science, a Superstars in Education winner and created the SMART Kids event.
"Leading a high performing school is one of the toughest, most rewarding jobs you can imagine," Appoquinimink School District Superintendent Matthew Burrows said. "… I can't think of anyone who is better suited to the job than Laure Wicks."
The district will be accepting applications for Wicks' prior position as assistant principal until July 7, school officials said.
