  • Two men from the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend area are part of a 20-person crew of Delaware firefighters battling a massive forest fire in Alaska.
Trained by the Delaware Forest Service, Patrick Gilchrist of Townsend, Adam Keever of Port Penn and 18 other firefighters from Delaware departed July 5 for North Pole, Alaska to battle the 82,000-acre Stuart Creek 2 fire, a blaze only 15 percent contained that is burning through hardwoods and black spruce.
As of Tuesday, the crew was camping at a staging area nicknamed “Tirebase,” but is expected to soon join up with a crew from Maryland before focusing on structure protection at the north end of the fire, which began June 25 as the result of a U.S. Army artillery exercise.
