UPDATE: Delaware State Police identified the 51-year-old Elkton, Md., man killed in Wednesday's fatal crash on Interstate 495 as Allan Cunha.
A 22-year-old Townsend man was involved in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 on Wednesday that killed a Maryland man.
The crash occurred just north of Edgemoor Road about 6:26 p.m. when Townsend resident Maurice Dawkins attempted to steer his 1998 Mazda 626 from the center lane to the right lane on southbound I-495 and struck another vehicle, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day.
The backend of Dawkins' Mazda clipped a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer driven by a 51-year-old Elkton, Md., resident that was travelling in the right lane, causing both vehicles to leave the west side of the interstate and travel down an embankment, Day said.
The Chevrolet overturned and struck a tree, while the Mazda came to rest at the bottom of the embankment.
The driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of his family.
Dawkins and his passenger, 21-year-old Newark resident Tyrique Fleming, were not injured.
All three people involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, Day said.
An investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed, he said.
